Did You Know?: The Albuquerque Roots of Crime Stoppers

Chris Albert

In July of 1976, when the investigation into the murder of Michael Carmen in Albuquerque, had effectively stalled, Detective Greg MacAleese collaborated with KOAT TV to produce and air a reenactment of the crime and offered a $1000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators.

That innovative tactile very quickly resulted in information that lead to arrests and the solving of that crime, and others too.

Shortly thereafter, with the support of MacAleese, the first chapter of Crime Stoppers was formed. By the mid 1980s, Crime Stoppers spread nationwide.

The Albuquerque chapter of Crime Stoppers will be honoring the 50th Anniversary of the organization with a benefit dinner held on Oct 21at the Embassy Suites in Albuquerque.
