The pedestrian activated RRFB, or Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon, is one of three the city has or is installing near middle schools, in this case, McKinley Middle School.

The addition of these signals was announced on a broadcast on KOB TV on May 6, 2026. An article on the KRQE website from the same day indicates that neighbors in this area around McKinley say that speeding is an issue. The KRQE article also quotes City Councilperson Stephanie Telles:

“They provide proven safety countermeasures in really high-traffic areas,” she said, adding that RRFPs increase driver yielding behavior. She said it’s important for areas where there are a lot of adolescents who may struggle a bit more with being aware of their surroundings.
